Hold companies responsible for keeping plastic out of nature

Trash and a jellyfish floating in clear blue waters.

Tell your elected officials that we can make recycling work, make companies responsible for the waste they create, and drive a future that keeps plastic out of nature. States can be leaders in implementing Extended Producer Responsibility that would remove the burden of recycling from taxpayers and communities and ensure the companies that create waste are responsible for reducing their plastic footprint.

This action is only open to US residents residing in Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. These states, identified by WWF's policy experts, have begun to take steps towards implementing Extended Producer Responsibility.

Dear state representative,

I am writing to encourage you to work to reform our waste management system. Our current plastic recycling system is broken. Over 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the world's oceans every year.

The good news is we can fix this problem. We can reform the way we produce, use, recycle and reuse plastic and other materials. It starts with implementing Extended Producer Responsibility.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a program that makes corporations who introduce plastic and packaging financially responsible for its collection, sortation, recycling and reuse. Producers fund and operate the system, removing the financial burden from taxpayers and shifting the focus to protecting communities and natural spaces. Importantly, producers are held to standards to ensure they are using recycled content and removing problematic materials.

You can be a leader in implementing Extended Producer Responsibility for all plastic and packaging, just like Colorado did earlier this year. I encourage you to develop and pass EPR legislation.

As an activist and community member in your district, I urge you to help fix our broken waste management system and keep our communities free of plastic waste.

Sincerely,
