Ask Congress to support the FOREST Act

Atlantic Forest; Brazil

One of the largest drivers of deforestation around the world is the expansion of commercial agriculture. Most of this land-clearing is illegal—fueling nature loss, climate change, corruption, and crime. The US must take steps to protect forests, the climate, and communities by stopping illegal deforestation. The bipartisan FOREST Act, introduced in both chambers of Congress, would require companies to trace where products come from and confirm that they are legally produced.

Dear Congressmember,

The Amazon rain forest and other critical ecosystems are at a tipping point beyond which they may never recover. One of the largest drivers of global deforestation and habitat loss is the global expansion of commercial agriculture for soy, cattle, rubber, cocoa, and palm oil production. The sobering fact is that more than two-thirds of this deforestation is illegal, driving nature loss and climate change while fueling corruption and crime, and undermining businesses that play by the rules.

As a major importer of these products, the US must act now to protect forests, the climate, and communities and help stop illegal deforestation.

I urge you to cosponsor and champion the bipartisan FOREST Act to help protect forests and communities and remove illegal deforestation from the products we consume every day.

By requiring importers of high deforestation-risk commodities to trace where their products come from and confirm they are legally produced, this bill will help ensure the products American consumers buy no longer contribute to the destruction of forests, abuses, and associated criminal activity.

Deforestation and forest degradation are root causes of some of the most pressing threats to our planet: biodiversity decline, climate change, zoonotic disease outbreaks, and tropical wildfires. This bill is an essential step to curb global emissions, conserve the world's forests and other natural ecosystems, and remove crimes and abuse from the food we eat and the products we consume.

Sincerely,
