A Farm Bill to support people and the planet

Crops from Cloverleigh Farm

Globally, our food systems are a leading driver of greenhouse gas emissions and nature loss – and the Farm Bill is one of the biggest opportunities to reverse these losses and drive significant improvements for climate, nature, and people.

As Congress reauthorizes the Farm Bill this year, they must seize this opportunity to improve the sustainability of our food and agricultural systems, and we need your help. Call for a Farm Bill that protects and builds upon climate- and nature-smart agriculture investments in rural communities, addresses food loss and waste, halts conversion of critical ecosystems, and promotes regenerative agricultural practices to support the resilience of landscapes, rural farms, and ranches.

Ask your members of Congress to ensure that the Farm Bill supports healthy people, a healthy planet, and a healthy farm economy.

Dear Senator/Representative,

As Congress prepares to reauthorize the Farm Bill, I ask that you ensure that this critical legislation invests in programs that support healthy people, a healthy planet, and our rural economies. The productivity and resilience of our nation’s farms, ranches, and rural communities is increasingly threatened by accelerating nature loss and more frequent and severe extreme weather events. The Farm Bill is a critical opportunity to advance the following priorities to address these threats and invest in the long-term health of US production:

  1. Support strong funding for conservation programs by continuing investments in these core programs and incorporating climate-smart Inflation Reduction Act funding into baseline conservation funds with climate sideboards.
  2. Support system-level solutions and regenerative practices in working lands programs by improving crop insurance options for diversified farming systems and supporting sustainable grazing practices.
  3. Conserve and restore critical resources and ecosystems via new incentives in conservation programs for improved management of freshwater resources and by strengthening and expanding the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program.
  4. Eliminate deforestation and conversion in agricultural supply chains by expanding Sodsaver nationwide and halting imports linked to illegal deforestation and illegal logging.
  5. Stop food loss and waste by improving federal coordination on food loss and waste, providing funding for planning and infrastructure that reduces food waste, and supporting research in food waste prevention.

It is important that Congress continue to build on a bipartisan legacy of investments in conservation and rural community health.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
