Urge Governor Hochul to sign the TREES Act into law

Amazon rainforest

The TREES (Tropical Rainforest Economic & Environmental Sustainability) Act would prevent the state of New York from purchasing products that contribute to tropical deforestation, one of the key drivers of nature loss and climate change.

This bill has passed both chambers of the New York State Legislature with bipartisan support. Now, Governor Hochul has the opportunity sign this bill into law.

This action is only open to New York residents. We encourage you to personalize your message on the next page, and let Governor Hochul know why this issue is important to you.

Dear Governor Hochul,

The TREES Act, which passed with bipartisan support last year, would support job creation and responsible businesses and help ensure that New York state doesn't contribute to the destruction of tropical forests. This bill would strengthen New York state as a:

  • Partner for responsible businesses. Passing this bill shows that the state of New York is directly addressing a global, national, and state problem with profound implications for New Yorkers. Tropical deforestation is driven by industrial logging and the clearing of forests for the grazing of cattle and the cultivation of soy, palm oil, cocoa, coffee, and other commodities. The clearing of tropical forests is often linked to human rights abuses, including violation of Indigenous peoples' and local communities' land tenure and rights.
  • Investor in New York's people and producers. New York's small businesses are the backbone of our economy, totaling more than 98% of all businesses and providing much of the state's private sector workforce. This legislation enables the state to invest in its people, agricultural producers, and businesses through public procurement and creates incentives for small, medium-sized, women- and minority-owned businesses that drive job creation.

  • Leader for forests and the climate. Forests are vital to life on Earth, providing essential resources to billions of people, supporting human health, harboring biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. Enacting this legislation makes clear that New York, the 10th-largest economy in the world, is a leader among governments in action for healthy forests, halting climate change, and supporting responsible businesses.

This bill is a win for the planet, for New York, and for New Yorkers. I urge you to sign the TREES Act into law without delay.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
